The Dark Tower II: The Drawing of the Three | Stephen King
Title: The Dark Tower II: The Drawing of the Three
Author: Stephen King
In case you were wondering, I have spent the past several years reading the works of Stephen King in order. As I'm usually reading three or four books at a time, the process has been somewhat slow. That said, at some point in the past year or two, I read the first Dark Tower book. I hated it. I absolutely detested it. I felt like I was missing something, because almost everyone I know who reads the works of Stephen King loves The Dark Tower. I hated the characters, I hated the plot...I just couldn't find much redeeming about the story.
The best comparison I can think of is watching Mad Max: Fury Road. People were raving about that movie, and I just didn't get it. I could appreciate that the visual effects were stunning, but what was the point of the movie? In like manner, I could appreciate the fact that Stephen King is a brilliant writer...but what was the point of the first Dark Tower book?
I know I touched on this a bit in my review of The Eyes of the Dragon, but one of the only things that I truly enjoyed about The Dark Tower was that the Man in Black reminded me so much of Flagg (of The Stand and The Eyes of the Dragon), and then when I found out that Flagg is also apparently somehow a part of The Dark Tower series, it gave me hope.
All of that aside, given my dislike of the first book, I wasn't all that excited about The Drawing of the Three being the next in line to read. However, I got over it quickly. This book is absolutely incredible. All of the characters, the jumps between worlds, every single thing about it is just absolutely wonderful. As much as I loathed book one, I am so excited to read the rest of the series now.
This book easily gets five out of five stars.
