A Court of Thorns and Roses | Sarah J. Maas

Title: A Court of Thorns and Roses Author: Sarah J. Maas Hey readers! Buckle up, because it's time for my much-delayed take on the "iconic" A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas. Honestly, the hype left me scratching my head. Growling? Purring? Is this a romance novel or a cat convention? First impressions? Not great. As the opening salvo in a series, this book felt like a damp firework. The world-building was, well, meh, and the characters seemed to function on the shared processing power of a toaster oven. (And that's being generous!) Then came the "riddle." Now, I consider myself a champion of strong female leads, but Feyre seriously tested my patience. I was this close to launching the book across the room when she couldn't decipher the riddle. Seriously, Feyre? I'm pretty sure I solved it before she even finished reading it. Rhysand? More like Sighsand. This dude's entire thought process seemed to reside south of the border, and every...

The Best Thing | Mariana Zapata

Title: The Best Thing Author: Mariana Zapata This book was all right. The cursing goes a bit overboard, in my opinion, almost like the author is just going for a reaction. That may or may not be true, but that's what it felt like to me. There's a whole plot line introduced with the main character Lenny's biological grandmother that felt pointless, because it didn't really go anywhere. The main love story is sweet. There's a big "reveal" in the book that I think was supposed to be a surprise, but I called it very early on in the book. All of that said, there are several laugh-out-loud moments, particularly concerning Grandpa Gus, and that is the main saving grace for this book, in my opinion. Because of Grandpa Gus and Peter, this book gets three out of five stars. Otherwise, it'd probably be less. It wasn't bad; it just wasn't great, either. ------------------------- READING PROGRESS: Needful Things by Stephen King: 84% Dracula by B...

Say You're Sorry | Melinda Leigh

Title: Say You're Sorry Author: Melinda Leigh I actually surprisingly liked this book a lot. I normally pick apart this genre of book like crazy, but this one was actually pretty enjoyable. The characters were likable, and I didn't have the plot figured out immediately, which was a huge plus. I was about 90% through the book before I figured it out, and I think that's pretty much when the author intended for you to start putting the pieces of the puzzle together, so that's good. There were a few editing issues that keep this from being a five star book for me, but they weren't so horrendous that it was distracting. I will say that this book was a very pleasant surprise. Four out of five stars. ------ READING PROGRESS: The Tommyknockers by Stephen King: 50% A Breath of Snow and Ashes by Diana Gabaldon: 74% The Berenstain Bears Chapter Book Collection  by Stan and Jan Berenstain : 32% A Clean Kill in Tokyo by Barry Eisler: STARTING NOW (This is Book On...

Hate Notes | Vi Keeland & Penelope Ward

Title: Hate Notes Authors: Vi Keeland & Penelope Ward These workplace romance novels are usually nothing but trash, and while this one is plenty trashy in places, it's actually a pretty sweet story. The man isn't a domineering pig, which is a pleasant change of pace in these types of books, and the woman is almost likable. She's definitely relatable, if nothing else. All in all, it's not the best book I've ever read by any means, but it wasn't terrible, and I was happy with how it ended, even if it was completely cheesy (literally and figuratively...you'll have to read it to find out what that means). Three out of five stars. -------- READING PROGRESS: The Tommyknockers by Stephen King: 36% A Breath of Snow and Ashes by Diana Gabaldon: 36% Rock Needs River by Vanessa McGrady: 48% Say You're Sorry by Melinda Leigh: STARTING NOW
